The European Parliament’s Brexit chief has branded main Brexiteers as pro-Putin “fifth columnists” who wish to destroy Europe from inside.
Man Verhofstadt mentioned there was a “circle of evil round our continent” stretching from “Putin, Erdogan, and on a nasty day – and that’s day by day in the intervening time – even Trump”.
However turning to Europe’s populist right-wing events, he added: “However our drawback runs deeper than that, deeper than solely international coverage or exterior safety. Europe has a fifth column in its ranks. Let’s be trustworthy.
“I name them the cheerleaders of Putin: Le Pen, Wilders, Farage. They’re doing just one factor: they take Kremlin cash, they take Kremlin intelligence.
“Like Arron Banks, the nice good friend of Nigel Farage right here, who colluded with Russians to make Brexit occur. Along with authorities leaders like Orbàn, Kaczynski, Salvini: these folks have just one objective and that’s to destroy Europe, to kill our liberal democracy.”
Mr Verhofstadt, the chief of the Parliament’s liberal group, can be liable for the physique’s function in Brexit talks.
He mentioned it was “time to get up” when the US president was “extra snug with autocrats than along with his European allies”.
